During this time, practitioners abstain from from meat, dairy, and other rich foods and practice increased prayer, almsgiving, and attendance at church services, as a way of cultivating humility and readiness to receive Christ. The fast is approached with quiet joy and anticipation, culminating in the Feast of the Nativity, where the fast is broken in celebration of the Incarnation of Christ.
