Nativity Fast

The Nativity Fast is a 40-day period of spiritual preparation observed by Orthodox Christians leading up to the celebration of Christ's birth, typically beginning on November 15th and continuing through December 24th on the traditional calendar (dates vary for churches using different calendars). During this time, practitioners abstain from from meat, dairy, and other rich foods and practice increased prayer, almsgiving, and attendance at church services, as a way of cultivating humility and readiness to receive Christ. The fast is approached with quiet joy and anticipation, culminating in the Feast of the Nativity, where the fast is broken in celebration of the Incarnation of Christ.
