Diwali, widely regarded as the most beloved Hindu festival, is also called the Festival of Lights. It honors Goddess Kali in Bengal, while in other parts of India it's devoted to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. Like many other Hindu festivals, Diwali connects to a tale of Vishnu defeating evil in one of his numerous incarnations. Within Jainism, the celebration—referred to as Mahavira Nirvana—marks Lord Mahavira's attainment of Moksa. The lit lamp represents the light of wisdom overcoming the darkness of ignorance and delusion.
